Self Care Tips

When it comes to self care, there are many different things that can be done. Some of the most important steps are to make sure that you are eating healthy and staying hydrated.

It is also essential to practice gratitude and set boundaries. Taking time to do these things can help you feel less stressed and anxious.

1. Take a bath or shower

Taking a bath is soothing and relaxing, but it also helps get your body clean. But a bath doesn’t have to be a luxury, and it can be as simple as adding some bubbles or even just reading a book.

A shower is quick and efficient, but it can strip your body of its natural oils. It’s important to know which is right for you.

Self-care is more than just bubble baths or face masks, it’s about adopting a healthy mindset. This can mean accepting that things like not having enough time or making mistakes is okay. It can also include making a regular commitment to something you enjoy, like meditation or exercise. It can also mean prioritizing annual checkups and keeping your house clean.

2. Go for a walk

When someone says they are going for a walk, it is usually the most literal thing – they are walking around the block to clear their head or get some fresh air. This form of self care can be as simple as a walk on your lunch break or as complex as a jog or swim.

Incorporating movement into your daily routine is an important part of physical self-care, which can also boost mental health and improve sleep. Getting enough quality sleep is also key to a healthy body and mind, and adults should aim for seven to nine hours of rest each night.

Social self-care is another aspect of a healthy lifestyle, which can include spending time with friends or pursuing hobbies. It can even be as simple as telling yourself “good job” during your day-to-day tasks or rewarding yourself with a small treat, such as chocolate or a movie.

3. Listen to music

Whether you listen to new music, a classical piece or an oldie, music has the power to make you feel good. “Music can help refocus the mind, relax the body and calm the emotions,” says Wilhelm.

She recommends listening to music that has a familiarity to it, so the brain does not get bored. “You can also try listening to genres you are unfamiliar with, which is a great way to challenge the brain,” she said.

Although self-care can be hard to do in the midst of busy work and family lives, it’s important for everyone. Self-care is not just bubble baths, but healthy actions throughout the day that make you feel happy and accomplished. It’s also something that can be done on a regular basis to build healthy habits.

4. Eat a healthy meal

While many of us think of food as a treat, it’s essential for the body to function and thrive. Instead of grabbing a quick, sugary snack or skip meals, eat a balanced diet that includes lean protein, healthy fats, fruits and veggies.

Hobbies like knitting, cooking new recipes or gallery hopping are fun ways to take time for yourself, and can boost mood and reduce stress. You might also try a meditation app, a calming music playlist or a coloring book to calm the mind.

It’s important to get enough rest, which can help reduce stress, increase energy, improve focus, immunity and workout recovery. Creating a consistent sleep routine and eliminating distractions such as the news (or doom scrolling) can help.

5. Exercise

If you’re able to do so, exercise is a great way to relieve stress, improve your mood, and maintain a healthy weight. You don’t need to go to the gym to get exercise; even just 30 minutes of walking each day can help.

Effective self care can be as simple as ensuring you shower every day, eating nutritious meals, and moving your body. It can also be as complex as learning to practice mindfulness, which is the ability to focus on the present moment and appreciate what’s good in your life. Finally, a key part of self-care is knowing when to say no to others, which can be challenging but can prevent you from overextending yourself or becoming overwhelmed. The best self-care is uniquely individualized to each person and is consistent with your own needs.
